Very Hard Luck to the Newbridge College Junior A Hockey Team who were defeated in the Plate Final on Thursday 14th by a strong Mucross side.
It was the culmination of a very successful season for the girls having been narrowly defeated in their League semi-finals which went to penalties against Mount Sackville.
The game started with both teams playing very tentatively the Newbridge defenders of Laura Hannon, Lucy Stapleton, Nessa Briody and Rachel Mc Mullen absorbed huge amounts of pressure in the first 15 minutes against some strong Mucross attacking play . After settling into the game Newbridge started to create some attack themselves with Louise Scully, Caoimhe Murphy and Emma O’Neill surprising Mucrosss with their level of skill keeping the opposition on their toes. At this stage the game was very exciting with both sides trying to dominate. The 1st half ended with Mucross getting a short corner. Fortunately after a lot of nailbiting by the supporters and coaches Gavin Groves and Tony Falvey the Corner was cleared and Newbridge could go into the 2nd half feeling they could win the game.
But it wasn’t to be as the second half went mainly Mucross way. They attacked relentlessly with our defenders doing a valiant job and Hannah Begely the goalkeeper keeping the teams hopes alive on numerous occasions. But after about 7 short corners Mucross broke the deadlock and scored with 15 minutes to go. Newbridge could not recover from this goal, they had given it their all but still fought bravely till the end with Mucross securing the win with a nicely worked second goal with only a minute to go. Special mention must go to the two 1st years on the team Rachel mc Mullen and Kate Hannon.
