Leinster League Final: Newbridge College 9 Clongowes 6

We start this week by congratulating our U16 rugby squad who were crowned Leinster Schools Transition Year League Champions on Wednesday. We beat Clongowes in a cracking game which was played in a windy Naas Rugby Club.

Newbridge won the toss and elected to play up the hill and a stiff breeze for the first half.  Even against the conditions Newbridge were making great ground out wide and looked to have scored when Adrian Dunne crossed in the corner team only to be adjudged to have knocked on over the line.  Fullback Gary Burns continued to make clear line breaks but each time it looked as if we were going to score, the move broke down.  When they got the opportunity, Clongowes kicked the ball deep and were twice rewarded with penalties in the following phases of play.  They converted both of these to leave the half time score 6 0 in the Clane school.  Newbridge started the second half intent on using the advantageous conditions as best as we could and got an early penalty which outhalf Conor Browne converted.  From the restart we got back down into the scoring zone but failed to come away with any points.  Clongowes to their credit, defended much better in the second half and denied Newbridge space out wide where we had enjoyed in the first half.  Another penalty gave Browne the chance to level the scores and he duly obliged.  The game was on a knife edge with 10 minutes remaining.  Clongowes then had a half chance but man of the match Gary Burns snuffed out and then Newbridge went down the other end and got the chance to go ahead from another Clongowes infringement.  And it was Browne who capped off a wonderful kicking display with a beautiful strike which sent the large Newbridge support into celebratory mood!  With hardly any time remaining, Sam Murray nearly scored a try to cap off a great performance but was held up over the line.  And that was it, referee Peter Dennihy blew the final whistle and Newbridge were victorious over their Kildare archrivals.  League organiser David Plumber aided by Naas RFC club president Tom Ashe presented captain Conor Browne with a League shield in front of the delighted Newbridge support.  Congratulations lads!
