Sports Roundup 26th October

SCT and JCT remain unbeaten!
Both of our Cup teams continued their winning ways with facile victories on Wednesday.

The Seniors beat The High School by 70 points to nil while the Juniors beat the same opposition 69:0.  While there are much tougher tests ahead, it is good to see that both sides are clearly equipped with the fire power to score tries.

RUGBY
TY 2nd’s 35 St Paul’s 1st 32
The TY 2nd's travelled to Dublin to take on St Paul's in their first league match of the season.  They started well and were rewarded with a try through Will Jennings, which Rob McGrattan-Brassil converted.  St Paul's came back strongly to score a try of their own and this saw the Dublin side take control of the first half. They scored three more tries, converting two and also added a penalty to leave the score 27:7 at halftime. Newbridge did a lot of soul searching at halftime and came out determined to put that disappointing display behind them.  They looked a different team, upping their intensity, especially in defence and then grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck when in possession.  Conor Johnston crossed for two tries after some excellent phase play by the entire team.  Will Jennings made it four tries for the front row union while Rob McGrattan-Brassil converted all three to make to score unbelievably 28:26 to Newbridge.  McGrattan-Brassil then completed an amazing comeback victory when he pounced on a loose ball to cross for a try, his performance richly deserved.  He also converted the kick. St Paul's to their credit finally scored on the final whistle to leave the final score 35:32.  An excellent victory in the end, with others to impress on the day Paddy Doran, Eoin Collins and Stephen Rigney up front and Daragh Reihn and Stephen O'Brien in the backs.

Inter A 59 CBC Monkstown 0
Newbridge College Inter A’s took to the field for their last match of the term away to CBC Monkstown. It was clear from their body language and in the warm-up that the Newbridge boys meant business. Newbridge jumped out of the blocks and had two or three early chances. Their constant pressure paid off and Tom Connolly scored their first try after 5 minutes. Newbridge switched off for a short period and had to defend their own line against a very strong CBC pack. Newbridge eventually cleared their lines and upped the tempo once again.
Cian Murphy almost touched down for Newbridge’s second try but unfortunately was held up. Cian made amends and four minutes later finished a well worked team try. Andrew Collins our newest addition to the front row from winger showed great strength and resolve by breaking through three CBC tackles and came within 5 meters of the CBC line before he was illegally taken down with a high tackle. Ewan Morrin showed real strength and determination as he scored Newbridge’s third and final try of the half, off the back of a ten meter scrum.
The second half saw Newbridge Inters play some of their best rugby they have played all year. It was the entire team’s shear aggression, intensity and dogged fight for the ball that powered the team to victory. The backs lead by Tom Connolly showed real speed, concentration and great movement both in attack and defence, but it is the forwards that stole the show. The back row of Dominic Doyle, Cian Dunne and Ewan Morrin appeared to be at every breakdown while the second row of Luke Heffernan and Shane McGroary cleaned out, sealed and carried forward a ridiculous amount of ball. This dominance was proven with 5 out of the remaining 6 tries coming from the pack.
Scores on the day were Tom Connolly 1 try and 7 conversions, Cian Murphy 1 try, Ewan Morrin 2 tries, Shane McGroary 1 try, Peter Doyle 1 try, Andrew Collins 1 try, Lewis Young 1 try & Conor Timmins (Sub) 1 try.  The final score was Newbridge 59 CBC Monkstown 0

Inter B 35 CBC Monkstown 12
In very challenging playing conditions, and against a competitive opposition, the Inter Bs played a tremendous game and go into the break on the back of an excellent 35 – 12 victory away to CBC Monkstown. The hard work done in training over the past few weeks was seen in some fine support play among the forwards, excellent handling in the backs and courageous defending at times to keep out the opposition. Leading from the front Conor Timmons, Sean O’Neill, Niall Stapleton and Alex Pocock were outstanding in the loose. Sean scored three excellent tries while Alex Pocock also touched down. They were ably supported by Matthew Nugent who played with focus. Ciaran Joyce got through a lot of unseen work and continued his good form. Cian Springate and Liam Callanan ensured lineout supply and showed good technique in the loose. Liam kicked two conversions.  Thomas Wall continues to impress at scrum half and scored an excellent try. Matthew Murtagh was outstanding in defense, while Captain Simon Hore took on responsibility, linked very well with the outside backs, and contributed three conversions. Centres Jack Travers and Andrew Dempsey showed their strength in attack and defense. Versatile Enda Dowling did very well with the ball in hand , and Paschal Thompson had to deal with a lot of tricky ball in difficult conditions, never holding back. Replacements Ruairi Dawson, Josh Peacock, Andrew Sweeney, Andrew Mc Loughlin, Dylan Johnson, Morgan H O’Dwyer and Tom Tinsley kept up the high level of play when they came on, to make it a fine squad effort.

Eller A  68 CBC Monkstown 7
The Eller As took on CBC Monkstown on Wednesday in their last game before the midterm break. With last week's game falling victim to weather conditions, the lads were straining at the leash to get going after an extended layoff. We started the game very strongly, with quickfire tries from Ben Howlett and Thomas Grant. The first half continued in much the same fashion and we took a commanding 40- 0 lead into the break. The second half was a more competitive affair but Oisin O' Cuill still managed to help himself to a hat trick of tries in a 10 minute period of Newbridge dominance. Final score Newbridge  68-7 CBC Monkstown

Eller B 68   CBC Monkstown B  3
A convincing win from Newbridge with a great team effort by all.  Try scorers included Jack Ross(4), Cian Gobbett, Jack Banahan, Evan Foley,  Eoghan  Maguire and Evin Magee.  Outhalf David Murphy kicked 7 conversions for difficult angles.   Daniel Bradley played well carrying the ball forward making good ground for the team.  Nathan McDonald, Richie Collins and Johnny Ryan all added to this fine display.  Well done boys
