We start this week by commiserating with our Senior Cup team who were defeated in the last 16 of the Leinster Senior Cup by Clongowes last Wednesday.
Many a report has already been written about this game and no doubt another one appears elsewhere in these pages. Therefore there is no need in rehashing the details of what was an incredible game of rugby. The thronged Forenoughts grounds was a testament to the hype which was the lead up to this tie of Kildare rivals. Now that the dust has settled, all we’re left with is the memory of what was one of the College’s biggest sporting days of the last decade. As an occasion, the scene in Naas Rugby Club was one that won’t be matched by another school’s game played in the country this season, bar none. The entire squad and coaching personnel are urged to feel proud of being part of such a day and also of the way in which they all played their respective roles. Defeat is hard to take and so it should be, but it goes without question that the boys will have gained vast experience for their future rugby careers. Congratulations to you all, you did the College proud.
Hard luck to the Senior 3rd on losing 1-0 against Loreto. They put on a great challenge and played really well throughout. Special recognition to Grace McGarry, Bobby McDonnell and Shauna Rothwell.
Congratulations to the Junior A’s on winning their group in hockey.
Congratulations to our Minor C Hockey team who defeated Mount Sackville 5-0 last Wednesday. They are now undefeated in their league this season. Goals scored by Ciara Horrigan, Jessica Murphy and Orla Curtis.
Congratulations for the 3rd week running to the Newbridge black team which WON the interschools showjumping competition in Broadmeadows in Ashbourne on Sunday the 1st of Feb. this confirms them in the lead in both Hoofprints and accumulative leagues for this year. The team members were Alyssa O'Neill, Carolyn Harty and Leanne and Ashley O'Sullivan. In the individual competition Alyssa came 2nd and 6th, Hannah McDonnell came 3rd, Aisling Doyle came 4th and Ashley came 7th. Congratulations to all that competed that day!
Congratulations to our showjumping team, Alyssa O'Neill, Carolyn Harty and Leanne and Ashley O'Sullivan, who came second in the latest interschools showjumping league competition held in swords on Sunday the 25th of January. Newbridge College is now in the lead in both leagues by 8 points. Congratulations to our competitors in the individual league competition where once again Newbridge College came 1st and 2nd. Alyssa O'Neill was 1st, Ashley O'Sullivan came 2nd, Delphine Cordonnier came 5th and Holly Hannigan came 8th.
Hard luck to our U16 Boys team who lost the final of the Midlands League Division 1 to the PBS last week. After a great game both normal time and extra time failed to separate these two sides. And so it was settled on penalties, and it was the PBS who held theire nerve better to win the title and retain the trophy which they won last year. This is still an excellent achievement for our boys who up to last year had been playing in the second division of the league. Well done lads.
Finally we would like to wish Paddy Ormsby the very best of luck with his move to Hamilton Academical FC. Paddy who has played on many an underage Ireland side, has signed for the next year and a half for the Scottish Premier Division side and we look forward to seeing him on Soccer AM in the future!
