Sports Roundup 7th February 2014
On Thursday last, the Juniors took to the pitch in St Marys to take on Castleknock in the first round of the Cup.
Their last outing in the same grounds finished with a disappointing loss in the league final. Thankfully the memories of that day have been replaced with a fine team performance, especially in the first half. From the off, Newbridge set the tone in pace and physicality and within the first quarter were 14 points to nil up. The set piece functioned well and the backline clicked even better. It is too difficult to pick out key players in the first half when everyone played a huge part. In all there were 5 tries scored, 4 of which were converted by Luke Morris. Luke also got a try for himself along with Tom Connolly, Kevin Kyne, Johnny Deane and Ben Howlett. The second half didn't go all Newbridges way. Castleknock showed why they were worthy opponents and fought back for much of the duration of the 2nd half. They outscored the inform team by 2 tries to 1 in the half. Daithi Murphy crossed for the Black and White. Luke M added the extras. The final score was 40 points to 12. All 23 players on the match day squad were involved and luckily all came through unscathed. We now await to hear who we face in the quarter final.HOCKEYSenior 1st 0 Holy Child 5
On Tuesday 4th February, Holy Child came down to Newbridge College to play against our senior 1st team for a league game. Newbridge had a great start but unfortunately didn’t play their full potential throughout the match. By halftime Newbridge were three nil down. Well done to Lynne Phelan and Emma O’Neill for receiving players of the match. The final score was 5-0 to Holy Child.Senior 1st 0 Columbus 3
Newbridge travelled to Columbus to play the first round of the plate. Newbridge started the match well with a lot of pressure up front. After fifteen minutes Newbridge unfortunately were unable to cope with Columbus’ fast breaks and let in three goals in succession. The second half was a fairly contested one but much to the disappointment of the Newbridge team they never got the ball over the goal line. The game ended three nil to Columbus. The captain Izzy O’Mahony received player of the match for her performance in the centre of defence. ATHLETICS
The South Leinster Schools Cross Country Championships took place in Cistercian College Roscrea this week and College athletes had a successful day out.
Best performance went to the Girls under 14 team with high finishes from the Grant twins - Hannah 6th and Kate 11th - and Keela Magee sandwitched between in 9th position. This was sufficient to give them 2nd place in the team event and qualification for the Leinster Championships. While there was much to be admired in their performance, there is still some more to come, and the girls will look forward to the finals with a degree of confidence.
The Girls under 15 team had cruel luck as their finishing total of 39 points would normally get them comfortably into the top three, but an almost freakish set of results saw them pushed down to 4th place and outside the qualifying teams positions. The top 15 individuals however also qualify, and Anna Nurse in 8th place and Aimee McGrath in 9th both go forward.
Jack Doyle gave the boys something to shout about with a storming run in the under 15 race. With 600m remaining Jack was in 3rd place, and while he faded on the run in, his 9th place finish was enough to send him on to the Leinsters also.
Roisin Crowe was confidently expected to qualify from the under 17 event, but a trip and fall just after the start left her with a mountain to climb. She did not panic however and worked her way through the field, and a final frantic sprint saw her just edge her way into 15th and final qualifying spot. She will be much better next time out.EQUESTRIAN
