Sports Roundup February 15

TOP STORIES
Congratulations to the Junior rugby team and their mentors on their fantastic win over Monkstown in the 1st round of the Junior Cup.

Matthew Madigan set up the first try by catching CMC off guard with a quick tap penalty and sent Ivan Briody in for the first try.  Minutes later a well worked 8 9 move off the back of the scrum led to a try for scrum half Mark Sutton.   In the second half, Matthew Madigan and Patrick Kyne crossed for further tries to leave the final score 22 points to nil. It was a magnificent team display and bodes well for the next round. Well done. Thanks also to the vociferous well behaved support.  The Junior Cup Quarter Final v Terenure College will take place on Thursday 25th February at 3.00 in Donnybrook.

HOCKEY
Congratulations to the Senior 1sts on reaching the semi-final of the League, after a convincing 5 – 1 win over a strong Newpark Secondary school.  Exhibition hockey saw Newbridge lead 4 -0 at the end of the first half.  A great overall team performance led by Muireann Kavanagh, Megan Sutcliffe, Melissa Lyons, Una Delahunt  and player of the match Louise Murphy.  We will be meeting the Teressians in the semi-final.

RUGBY
Due to the Junior Cup match, there was only one other game played this week. Well done to the Inter B team on their  32 – 22 win over Glenstal A.

The Senior Seconds continued their league with a trip to St. Columba’s last week.  On a very heavy, wet pitch it was never going to be a day for open running rugby.  The game started with Columba’s  exerting some early pressure and this led to the first scoring opportunity.  However, the attempt at the penalty drifted right and wide.  Further penalties conceded by the College in the Columba’s half were punished by the home sides first centre returning them to within centimetres of the College line.  The College defense from the resulting lineouts was excellent and the pressure released.  However, this could not continue for the game.  On winning the lineout, Columba’s mauled over from five metres to open the scoring on 24 minutes.  The conversion made it 7 nil to the home side.  A half strewn with poor decision making and needless penalties by the College came to an end with the College just starting to get a foothold in the game.
The second half saw a much improved and focused College side take the field.  Continual pressure from the College was matched, however, by some resolute defending by the home team.  Although they were to spend 33 minutes in their oppositions half, the College looked like they were not going to get across the line.  However, with 64 minutes gone and after some immense work by the Newbridge pack, Ronan O’Neachtain snipped from 5 metres out an touched down.  Unfortunately, Cathal Maguire missed the extra two points.  As the pressure grew further on the home team and the College within 10 metres of the Columba’s line the referee signaled the end of the game.  A disappointed College side were to leave with nothing except a 7-5 defeat, a score which did not reflect their effort or dominance in the game.  Notable mentions also go to William O’Brien, Micheal Brown, Cormac Dillon and the pack as a whole.

EQUESTRIAN
The Equestrian Teams have recorded their 5th win of the current league season.  The winning team was Alyssa, Carolyn Harty, Ashley O’Sullivan & Clare Manning.  The team of Aisling Doyle, Una Delahunt, Emily Beere & Carol Lawlor also qualified for the jump-off to finish 6th. Our third team on the day Donal Delahunt, Brid Conlan and Lucy & Roisin McCarthy finished in joint 8th place. Alyssa also won the individual – her 9th win of the season. Carolyn Harty took 4th place and Ahsley O’Sullivan came 5th & 6th!  Sadhbh Springate came 7th in the novice individual.
