Commiserations to our Junior A Hockey team on their defeat to Kings Hospital in the replay of the first round of the Cup.
The team played superbly and the match went to penalties where they narrowly lost in sudden death penalty flicks. Player of the match Emily Higgins and goalie Ciara Conaty.
The Senior Seconds got back to playing after the extended Christmas break with a trip to Terenure. Proceedings got under way with a great start from the College. A near-miss for a try from captain Ben O’Connor just 90 seconds in was followed by a try on 4 minutes coming from a Ronan O’Neachtain cross-field kick. The ball was collected and grounded by O’Connor. This was followed just 2 minutes later with a well worked try from Cathal Maguire. Maguire failed to convert either try leaving it 10 nil with just 7 minutes on the clock. A more focused defense from Terenure saw no more scoring until the 22nd minute. With Ciaran O’Neachtain picking from the base of the scrum, Cormac Dillon was on hand to collect the ball from the resulting ruck and score a five pointer. He followed this up with an intercept and ran in from 20 metres out to add five more. This try was converted by Maguire. It would stay 22 nil until after the break.
A tougher start to the second half saw the hosts put together some good attempts but failing to put points on the board. The fifteen minutes at the start of the second half saw two tries, both from the College. O’Connor crossed for five from a well-worked back move and John Jennings, after some juggling, scored from behind a scrum. Neither were converted. On 63 minutes Terenure finally got some reward for their efforts with a try to make the score 32-5 to the College. However, the last word would go to the College. Maguire scored his second with a snipping run from a solid scrum with just minutes left. This was converted by O’Connor to leave it 39-5 at the finish. A notable mention must also go to Dan Tinsley.
