Sports Roundup Friday 10th January

Junior A 3 Castletroy 26
On the back of a good win against Ard Scoil last week (21-14) Newbridge would have expected to be competitive on their own pitch.

Castletroy, however, dominated in many facets of play, especially at the breakdown. They were more physical and made both taking the ball into contact and rucking very difficult. Defensive errors flattered them on the scoreboard as the game finished up 3 to 26. Luke Morris kicked the only points for Newbridge. Thomas Grant did well in the pack and so did Larry Kelly who has made a comeback from injury. Captain , Daithi Murphy, made some fantastic tackles and worked tirelessly. Next match is away to Rockwell. We'll be hoping to fix some of the problems that arose today.

Eller A 34 Castletroy 5
The Eller As travelled to Limerick to take on Castletroy College in their first match after the Christmas layoff. We started the game very well and spent the first five minutes camped inside the 22. Eventually the pressure paid off when Rob Scully crashed over from close range to open the scoring. The next 15 minutes continued in a similar fashion but poor passing in the difficult conditions meant two guilt edged try scoring chances went a begging. Newbridge were made to rue these missed opportunities when the home side tied up the scores on the stroke of half time with a well worked try down the blindside. The second half saw the visitors back on top and Tom Doyle marked his return from injury when he powered over two minutes after the interval. Some fine handling in midfield from Jack Hannon and Daniel Caulfield then gave Cian Lawlor the space to outpace his man and touch down. Jack Doyle was next on the scoresheet when he picked from a ruck and outpaced the cover to score from 30 meters. The Newbridge backline was really firing at this stage with Hannon and Caulfield again making the space for Harry Quirke and Jordan Nolan to make a couple of eye catching breaks into Castletroy territory. This created the platform for Rob Scully to dive over for his second try after some good play by Daniel O Connor. The scoring was rounded off when Nolan wriggled over after Muiris Cleary and Ro Burns sucked in the home defence with good close in carrying.  Final score Newbridge 34 - 5 Castletroy

Eller B 46 Castletroy 10
The first year B team had an excellent win against Castletroy this week. Played in terrible conditions Newbridge got off to an excellent start with two early tries from Alex Buckley and Sean Murphy. Castletroy hit back with two of their own almost immediately. The score at half time remained 12-10. It wasn't until the second half that Newbridge really got going. A brace from James Warren and one from Mark Hayden, Sean Murphy and Cormac Stopes meant Newbridge ran out comfortable winners. Result 46-10.

Senior 1st 1 Loretto Bray 0
Newbridge began the New Year with a challenge match against Bray to prepare for their upcoming matches. Newbridge began well and attacked from the first whistle. They were unfortunately unable to capitalise from these attacks early on. Bray had some opportunities but were well defended. The score was nil all at half time. Newbridge continued to attack and their reward came halfway through the second half with a lovely piece of play that was finished beautifully by Emma O’Neill. Bray came back and applied some pressure on Newbridge with a short corner, that was well defended. The game finished Newbridge 1 Bray 0. This win was a great start to the New year which the team will hope to repeat next week when they play Newpark at home on Wednesday at 1:30.

Junior B’s 2 Loretto Bray 0
Newbridge college junior B team travelled to Loretto Bray on Wednesday the 8th of January to play in their last league match! The game started out with some great attacking and defending from both sides! The first half ended 0-0 and both teams went off for a team talk!! The second half began with a booming improvement from the Newbridge side resulting in a short corner taken out by Megan Hoare, rebounded by Roisin Kearns and scored by Aiveen Treacy! Now the game really got heated up! With just ten minutes to go Newbridge ran the pitch and passed it into Megan Hoare who scored their second goal! The match ended with a 2-0 win for Newbridge College! The girls had some great goal opportunities from Aoife butler and Gbemi Lahndenghi! A great game played by all and a big thank you to Caitlin Breen and Aoife Butler who stepped in from the as for our players who couldn't make it.

1st Year’s v St Gerard’s Bray
First years played St Gerard's on Wednesday, the A team were up against strong opposition and though they played very well, were beaten 2-0. The St Gerard's team looked like a more experienced team and played the ball well amongst each other, the College girls needed to play with a bit more confidence, as potentially they are a very good team.
The B team, played a super first half, putting their opponents under constant pressure but to no avail, both St Gerard's teams had exceptional keepers. After half time, the visitors put 2 goals past the College defence very quickly, but from superb play by the midfield, Ellen Ayerst and Keela Magee combined to get one back, and with 3 minutes to go Mary Hamilton played the ball up the left and Orla Thompson got a super goal. The score remainder 2-2, a well deserved draw, this team played extremely well and with great spirit, Clodagh Rea was exceptional in defence.
