Sports Roundup Friday 13th February 2015
Our Senior team booked their place in the semi final of
this year’s Leinster Schools Senior Cup with a hard fought win against
St Andrew’s College last Tuesday.
Played in front of a large crowd, we started very well and soon took the lead. Having earned a penalty, we kicked to the corner. From a clean catch in the lineout, Brian Larkin reacted very well when the Andrew’s pack decided not to defend the anticipated maul. He turned and dived over for a fine opportunity try. Ten minutes later we doubled our lead when Mike Joyce picked from the base of a ruck on the 10m line, when he spotted a gap in the Andrew’s defence. Once clear, he showed great pace in beating the cover defence and dive in for a fine score. Andrew’s fought back well but our defence stood strong, marshalled well by Paddy Ryan and Connor Johnson. Half time 10:0
Andrew’s started the second half very well and piled the pressure on up front. We were guilty of losing a couple of turnovers at the breakdown and this helped our opponents gain good field position. When we did have the ball, our backline failed to find the form which they had shown in the 1st round. Our handling errors numbers far too high for a game of this stature. Andrew’s efforts were rewarded when they got close to our line, and powered over to halve the deficit and it was game on. This seemed to be the trigger for the Newbridge performance to improve and we raised the intensity of the remainder of the game. We forced a penalty which Colm Doyle coverted to extend our lead to the crucial 8 point mark. We played smart rugby for the remainder, pinning Andrew’s back in their on 22 and forcing them to try to play their way out. Ultimately, our defence would not let that happen and we held out for what could be called an ugly win. Brian Larkin had a great game while Tim Murphy also impressed at outhalf. We keenly await the semifinal draw which takes place just after this article went to print.RUGBYInter A v Pres Bray
Newbridge College Inter A's were out this week against a very strong Pres Bray side that are being widely talked about this year. Newbridge felt the real brunt of Pres' powerful pack and strong running backs, and found themselves 10 - 0 down after 12 minutes. Newbridge finally got more to grips with the pace of the game and pulled a try back after Ethan Lyons put a well weighted kick in over the top of Pres' backs for Daniel Caulfield to pounce. Newbridge regrouped at half time and up their intensity from the restart. Fionnan Morrin had a superb carry, reinforced by another huge carry by Oisin Halpin and then a series of pick and goes was finished off by Ro Burns. Pres pushed out to a 17 - 10 lead against the run of play. Newbridge's response was quick. With a lot of team pressure Pres were forced into a loose clearance kick and Daniel O Connor stepped 3 players before winning a foot race from 40 metres. David Higgins sealed a well deserved 20 - 17 win for Newbridge when he blocked down a Pres clearance kick and scored off the block. Players that stood out for Newbridge were Billy Kavanagh, Oisin Halpin, Finn O Brien, Fionnan Morrin, David Higgins, Ethan Lyons and Daniel Caulfield.
Eller A v CBC Monkstown
The Eller As travelled to Monkstown to take on CBC on Wednesday last. The away side started the game like a house on fire and raced into a commanding lead. In a superb first half performance from the Newbridge back line Marcus Kiely, John Shanahan and Sam Cahill all helped themselves to two tries each while Jamie Gaire, Conor Mc Groary and Donal Conroy also crossed the whitewash. The second half was a frustrating affair from a Newbridge viewpoint, as they struggled to build phases and got turned over far too frequently at the breakdown. Conroy managed to score his second try shortly after the break but it was Monkstown who had the final say with 2 late tries. Final score Monkstown 10 - 66 NewbridgeOther Results:
