Sports Roundup Friday 18th December 2015

RUGBY
SCT 15 Castleknock College 17
The Senior Seconds took on Castleknock in the pre-Christmas Order of Merit competition.

The College got off to a good start and were playing most of the rugby but ill-discipline cost them a lot of territory during the half.  One of these penalties saw the first score of the game with Dublin side taking a 3-nil lead.  The College hit back with a tries from Enda Dowling and  Caomhán Doolan, who was rewarded for some excellent individual play.  Neither was converted.  However, the College were still giving away soft penalties and a series of these saw Castleknock just inches from the try line.  A great defensive setup was eventually breached right on halftime and the conversion made it 10 all at the break.

The second half saw the Northsiders take control of the game and score an early try to take a seven point lead.  The College, who had by now slowed he penalty count, dug deep to pull the lead back to two points.  Following some great forwards work off a lineout, Niall Stapleton picked from the base of a ruck and crashed over.  The game continues with both sides coming close to scoring but much of the game being played between the two 22's.  Try as they might the College just couldn't break the Castleknock defence and the game finish in a 19-17 loss for the College.  A massive performance by all involved but special mentions go to Niall Stapleton, Cillian O'Brien and Man of the Match Caomhán Doolan.

Junior B 10 Gonzaga College 15
Last Wednesday saw Newbridge College Junior B squad take on Gonzaga in what was the final game before Christmas. Both teams had good form coming into the game and was a very even contest throughout. Newbridge had the opening chance of a score but strong defending kept the Kildare side at bay. The second half saw Newbridge break the deadlock when Alex Buckley sliced through the Gonzaga defence to score under the post, Cian Lawlor converted. Gonzaga always looked dangerous with ball in hand and were back on level terms with 15 minutes gone. Newbridge took the lead from a penalty following great forward play but that was to be their final score of the match. Gonzaga scored their second try of the afternoon to take a 2 point lead into the last 5 minutes. And on the final whistle scored a penalty to leave the final score Newbridge College 10 - Gonzaga 15. A very pleasing performance didn't reflect on the scoreboard and we now look forward to the Junior B league after Christmas. Best on the day were Cormac Stopes, Jack Higgins, Finn O' Brien, Ryan Mullins and Fionn Walsh.
