Leinster Senior Cup Quarter Final
SCT 7 Belvedere 23
Leinster Senior Cup Semi Final
SHT 1 Loretto Foxrock 2
It is with great pride that I begin this week’s sporting update even though both of our teams said goodbye to premier competitions this week. Both squads did the school proud and can say that they came on so close to causing upsets in their respective competitions. On Monday our Senior Rugby team led Belvedere College with 20 minutes to go but succumbed to the power of the Dublin school in the closing 10 minutes. On Thursday on Senior Hockey team were 1:1 with Loretto Foxrock before conceding in the dying minutes when it looked as though the tie would be settled on penalties. Congratulations to all who took part and made for one this year’s school highlights.
Inters v Kilkenny
The Inters travelled to Kilkenny to play 2 games. In the A game, we were guilty of a lazy start and paid the price when the home side scored a converted try. Our primary issue was line speed in defence. In the second half we upped the intensity a great deal and had long periods of possession. This led to our try when Tom Bohan caught an intercept and fed Calum Corcoran who'll finished off what was a fine score. 7:5 down, 15 minutes left and all to play for. Both teams were on top defensively and both sides worked really hard at keeping their liner in tact. Just on the final whistle, Kilkenny scored again to end a very entertaining game as a contest. Those to impress for Newbridge on thed day were Kieran Kelly, Sam Fitzgibbon and Tom Bohan. Final Score Kilkenny 14 Newbridge 5.
Ellers v Kilkenny
Eller A’s fought hard against a big Kilkenny side and having been 10-0 down after half time came back to 10-7 with a try from Sam Watson and had them back in the game. Newbridge kept the pressure on for periods of time but two tries from Kilkenny sealed their win. However Newbridge never gave up and fought hard into the dying seconds and retained the ball well to drive over the line for their second try by John Sheedy and converted by Conor Manifold. Final score 14-24 to Kilkenny.
The Eller B's had a convincing win over Kilkenny on their return from mid-term break. It was an overall impressive team performance capped with tries from Hugo Owens, Sean Stynes, Luke Higgins (2) and Bryn Moore (4).
Newbridge College Senior Girls took part in a blitz on Wednesday hosted by Wesley. The hosts and Villiers (Limerick) were playing 1st which meant we played our 2 matches back to back. 1st up was the Limerick side and it was obvious from early on that they weren't a match for the Kildare outfit. It was 20 nil at time and finished 41 to nil. The score was impressive in that 6 different people scored the 7 tries. (Doireann Halpin, Sinead Sexton, Victoria Keogh, Maebh Breen, Ivanna Dempsey and Sophie Lyons (2) with conversions by Ivanna)
The 2nd game was more competitive and the girls couldn't just rely on breaking the line and offloading. They adjusted nicely and were able to put phases together. Sophie Lyons ended up on the end of these passages of play to score 4 tries, 3 of which were converted by Ivanna Dempsey. The girls that didn't cross the whitewash certainly played their part. The ground made by Ruby Udell, Corina Coughlan and Ellen Enright was very effective. Megan Ferguson claimed a few kick offs and did some instinctive things that few would believe she is a beginner. Sarah Buckley got involved in some great interplay on the wing and Susie Tracey (who hasn't been able to train due to an injury) got her 1st taste of competitive rugby; you wouldn't have known it by the way she played today. Therese Gallagher should get a special mention for travelling to support while on crutches.
Other Results: Senior 4ths 17 Castleknock 25; Inter B 64 Kilkenny 0; Eller C 12 Kilkenny 5.
Senior 3rd’s v High School
We made heavy weather of this one. Team never got going against a poor High School Team. The only goal of the game came midway through the first half. An aggressive burst from the left of midfield, lead to a free run into the circle for a slip inside and a tidy finish. I thought we’d lead on from that but unfortunately that was how it finished. We now progress again to the next phase of the league.
Other Results: 1st yr A 1 Alex 3; 1st Yr B 0 Alex 4; Minor A 0 Alex 1; Minor B 1 High School 0.
