Sports Roundup Friday 24th January 2020

Cup Season is Upon Us!

Both of our Rugby Cup teams are in their final week’s preparation before commencing this year’s Cup campaigns.

The Seniors will be first out when they face CBC Monkstown at 3pm on Friday January 31st in Donnybrook, while the Juniors 1st Round tie against St. Gerards’ is fixed for 3pm on Monday 3rd February in Templeville Road.  The very best of luck to all involved!

RUGBY
Seniors v St. Munchin’s
The Senior 1st squad headed to the University of Limerick to take on St. Munchin's in their last fixture before their Senior Cup first round game on January 31st.  The College started well and an early attack saw Sam Prendergast chip through and Jamie Garie touch down for an early try. Sam Cahill and Marcus Kiely along with a Prendergast conversion stretched the College. However, the hosts made the most of a lapse in the College concentration to grab seven points just before the break to make it 17-7 at halftime.
St. Munchin's started the second half strongest and narrowed the College lead further with another converted try. They pushed hard to take the lead but the College defense held.  The College regrouped after this early pressure and settled well after a number of changes.  Tries from Cahill and Connor Halpenny, the latter being converted by Prendergast, pushed the College to a 29-14 lead and this is how it remained until the final whistle.  A worthwhile exercise with the home side asking some serious questions which will help give the coming fortnight some focus.

Eller Rugby

The Ellers Rugby resources were split between Howth and Newbridge on Wednesday the 22nd of January.  An Ellers XV took on near neighbours Patrician Secondary School in the College. The PSS emerged victorious in a great game of rugby, with lots of good play from both sides. All squad members received game time with lots of stand out performances most notably from: Cian Hannigan, Ethan Flanagan, Patrick Sheehy and Owen Sheedy It is hoped that this will become an annual fixture. Final score: 24-34

Another Ellers squad travelled to St. Fintan’s High School and again all players received a full half of game time. The Ellers were much too speedy, skills rich and slick for their opponents and ran out comfortable 14-56 winners. Lots of the squad produced notably displays including Patrick Kennedy, Thomas Daly, the Flynn twins (Robert and Thomas) and Mikey Murphy.  Next up is Gonzaga College at home next Wednesday, with kick off provisionally set for 2pm.

HOCKEY
Newbridge Minor C 2 Wesley D 0
This was a super display from a team that are progressing game by game. It is their first win of the league and well deserved. Lucy Whyte captained the team and led by example scoring two super goals. Alva Coyle played in goals for the 1st time and was superb. There are some beginners on this team who only started playing hockey this year so all credit to them.  Kate Ryan was unfortunate as she scored a beauty of a goal but the whistle had just blown for a short corner. Everyone played to the best of their ability and there was great celebrations when the final whistle went. The team have one game left so hopefully it’s onwards and upwards.

Other Results: Senir Prem 2 Loretto on the Green 2; Junior B 2 Sion Hill 0; Senior 3rd’s 0 Wesley 3.

EQUESTRIAN
Showjumping Results:
Congratulations to the Open Showjumping team of Niamh Behan, Alice O'Sullivan, Mary Fitzgerald and Jamie Hargaden who took 2nd place at Wexford Equestrian Centre on Sunday the 19th of January after a super jump off by Mary Fitzgerald and Jamie Hargaden. Congratulations also to Niamh Behan who took 2nd in the Open individuals with Jamie Hargaden taking 3rd and Alice O'Sullivan 5th.

BADMINTON
Our U19 Badminton team of Stephen Moreau, James Sexton, Mark Hall, Ben Jones and Patrick Moxom represented Kildare schools at the recent Leinster Championships in Baldoyle, Dublin.  Despite some great performances in many games they didn't make it into the final playoffs, however reaching the Leinster Championships was a great achievement for the squad, who were also moved up a competition division this year.
