Sports Roundup Friday 27th October 2017

Leinster Junior League v CBC Monkstown
Newbridge College Juniors were in action this week against a big and strong CBC side. With quite a few injuries and on the road, this was always going to be a tough challenge.

The first half played out extremely evenly with both teams creating clear chances yet both defences being up for the challenge. All that separated the teams at half time was a CBC penalty kicked on the last play of the half.

The second half really saw the game open up. 1st to strike were CBC with a try under the posts after a dink in over the top. Newbridge responded with a great team try finished by Dan Silke-Fetherston and converted by Adam Connelly. With a man in the bin Newbridge conceded again. Shortly after Newbridge were restored to 15 CBC would score their third in the corner off a mauled lineout. With seven minutes left, Newbridge went for it and scored another fantastic team try finished by Sam Prendergast. Nearing the 60 minute mark Newbridge were charging down the field again when a pass was intercepted inside the CBC 22 and CBC scored again.
The final scoreline read Newbridge College 14 CBC Monkstown 27.
Players that stood out were James Sheedy, Donough Lawlor, Conor Halpenny and Dan Silke-Fetherston.

Eller A v Pres Bray
Eller A’s lost out on a hard fought game against Bray. They opened he scoring with a try from Tadgh Brophy and converted by High Hamilton. Bray responded with 3 tries, 2 of which were slight fortunate scores. The opening the second half Newbridge scored superb try from Sam Watson and excellently converted again by Hamilton. Newbridge pressed Bray and were very unlucky not to score several times and then conceded a break away try. Newbridge finished the strongest with a try well worked scored by Conor Manifold. It finished 33-19 but the game was more tightly contested than the score reflects.

Senior 3rd’s 3 Wesley 0
Best performance of the season to date.  We started the game with great urgency and scores within the first minute from our first attack. Number 2 followed shortly after and we were well in control. After the second goal Wesley got more into the game and saw long periods of possession but our defending was strong and decisive. Goal number 3 was the goal of the game and was a superb passing move resulting in a tap in far post. Half time, 3-0.  The second half saw a number of good attacks but saw good saves and stronger Wesley defending so no further goals came. We withstood some Wesley pressure at the end to finish with a convincing win.

Minor Prem 0 Alex 2; Minor 3rds 1 Dalkey 1 (Lost on penalty flicks); 1st Yr A 3 St Andrews 3, 1st Yr B 1 St Andrews 3; 1st Yr C 1 St Andrews 3; 1st Yr D 0 St Andrews 2.

Well done to our senior soccer team who won their 2nd league match of the season when they beat St Paul’s of Monasterevin 6:3 on Thursday.  Scorers on the day were Dan Madaghjian (2), Cian Gobbet (2), Jack Moran and Tom Browne.  This result means that we have topped our group and are guaranteed a home semi final.

Hard luck to our Junior Golf Team of David Marshall, Harry Masterson and Charlie Connell who missed out of qualifying for the Leinster finals of the Junior Matchplay Championship by the narrowest of margins.  They finished tied third with two other teams and missed out on qualifying by a single stroke.

The latest leg of the interschools competition was held in JAG Equestrian on Sunday 22nd.
