Sports Roundup Friday 3rd March
Newbridge College JCT 26 Wesley College 5
Our Juniors faced Wesley College in the Leinster Schools' Junior Cup in Donnybrook last Wednesday.
We started the game very well and scored early when Sam Cahill dived over from close in. This was after some great pressure from our pack with Paddy O'Flaherty and Donough Lawler to the fore to our carries. Soon after we were 12 nil up when Dan Silke-Fetherston finished off and excellent first phase backline move after a great scrum from the pack. John Shanahan added the extras. To their credit, Wesley bossed the next 10 minutes of the game but our indiscipline was disappointing too. We conceded 3 unnecessary penalties which set Wesley up for a 5 metre lineout which they drove over for a try.
We hit back just before halftime when another well worked backline play off another great scrum, saw Jamie Gaire score on it corner. Shanahan drained the touchline conversion for a 19 5 halftime lead. Cahill and also outhalf Donal Conroy were orchestrating our attack very well while Marcus Duke and Shanahan were getting through a huge amount of work in midfield. Up front, Jack O'Connell and Peter Leavy were very dominant in both defence and attack.
The second half was a scrappy affair with neither side able to put together a strong set of phases. We welcomed back Tom Browne to the field after a long injury lay off which started back in October. We scored another try to finish the game as a contest when Marcus Duke crashed over from close. Sam Cahill added the conversion. It was great to get all 23 players involved on the day, and while we were frustrated by our second half display, all you can do is beat the team that's in front of you. We move on to the next round and eagerly await the challenge that the semi final and St Michael's College will present.
