Sports Roundup Friday 4th December 2015

TOP STORY
JCT 9 Gonzaga College 3
Congratulations to our Junior rugby squad who beat Gonzaga to book a place in the semi finals of this year’s Leinster Schools’ Junior League.

Having draw 10:10 in Dublin last week, the lads battled extremely well and deservedly won this close game.  Next up is a game against ROscrea with a place in the League final at stake.

RUGBY
SCT 55 Castletroy 17
The Seniors headed to Limerick to take on Castletroy College. A positive start for the College saw them take the lead trough a Colm Stapleton try. A penalty try from a lineout maul soon followed which Gavin Burke converted. Castletroy made the most of some soft College defence and crossed three times converting one. A try from Kevin Kyne converted by Burke kept the College in front and at half-time the visitors led 19-17.

The second half saw the College dominate possession and territory. Unanswered tries from Kyne, Colm Doyle, Patrick Ryan (2), Johnny Deane and a brilliant 80 metre breakout from Mike Joyce along with conversions from Burke (2) and Ruairi Cleary (2) saw the College run out 55-17 winners.

Eller A 12 CUS 15
The Eller As faced off with CUS on Wednesday last. Both teams took unbeaten records into the game and unfortunately it was the Newbridge side who’s winning run came to an end. The visitors started strongly and opened the scoring after 10 minutes when their powerful number 8 picked off the base of a scrum on the 22 and beat a number of tackles to score. The advantage was doubled soon after when their winger crossed after some good midfield handling. Newbridge gradually began to find their feet and created some chances but lack of depth in the Newbridge back line meant that the CUS defence was able to scramble and shut down the threat. The Dublin side stretched their advantage in the opening minutes of the second half when their number 8 got his second try off a 5 meter scrum. The hosts finally came to life and dominated possession and territory for the remainder of the game. Donough Lawler and Luke Dunleavy began to make more and more yardage in close while David Marshall, Hugh Prendergast and Adam Conneely looked increasingly dangerous out wide. This dominance was rewarded when Diarmuid Mangan powered over from close range after the home side went through multiple phases. The deficit was cut further when Daniel Silke-Fetherston went over after good play from Sam Prendergast and Hugh Doyle. Unfortunately the comeback wasn't to be completed and CUS fought hard to close the game out. Final score Newbridge 12 - 15 CUS

Other Results: Senior 3rds 13 St Michael’s 17; Inter A 7 Castleknock 24; Inter B 7 Castleknock 5; Eller B 65 CUS C 12; Eller C Black 0 CUS B 79; Eller C White 60 CUS 85.

HOCKEY
Senior 3rd’s 0 Wesley 2
Wednesday the 2nd saw the Senior 3's travel to Wesley College. An inspiring all round team effort took the match to Wesley from the first whistle. Chloe in goals had very little to do thanks to the back four of Robyn, Eve, Olivia and Mari shutting down every Wesley attack.  New midfield pairing of Aveen and Carina along with Becky and Alexandra over powered their Wesley counterparts with some incredibly smart fast passed hockey and also had the upper hand marking them out of the action.  After the half time break of 0-0 Newbridge picked up where they left off putting pressure on the Wesley goal with Maeve and Laura linking in fantasticly to win short corners on multiple occasions.  Wesley came away with the win taking advantage of some generous breaks but that didn't take the shine of the pride the girls walked off the pitch.

Minor A 0 Loreto Dalkey 0

Minor A's hit the ground running in their encounter with Loreto Dalkey earlier today. They played with heart, determination and grit for the 1st 15 minutes but let it slip slightly and allowed Loreto into their circle. After regrouping at half time, minors came back fighting, unlucky not to score.  An all round impressive performance from all the girls. Very proud coach!! Final score 0:0

1st Year v high School
A huge improvement was seen in the performance of the A and B 8-a-side teams this week in High School. Both teams played clever and skilful hockey and though the As went down to simple early goal Laura Carroll scored right on half time to change ends 1-1, in the second half great pressure from all the forwards, Sophie Murray, Abbey Creedon and Mia Walshe yielded 2 more goals so the girls finished well deserved winners 3-1. The Bs were 1-0 up most of the first half with great goal from Sophie Carroll, but were pulled back, they went ahead with another goal from Jasmine Maddock only again to be caught, finishing 2-2. Great credit goes to Emma McAleenan in goal who brought off some great saves and Muireann Parker who was excellent in defence.

Other Results: Snr 1sts 0 Wesley 5; Junior C 0 Kilkenny 0.
