The Seniors Rugby Team won their first round game in the Vinny Murray cup
yesterday against Mount Temple in Barnhall RFC. They won with a scoreline of 20-3 but in truth could have and perhaps should have won the game by more but a combination of poor handling and ill-discipline cost Newbridge more tries. It was a nervous performance from the start after a run of bad results recently and some very bad luck with a run of injuries to key players most notably in the backline. Nerves were settled somewhat in the first half by two excellent penalties by out-half Peter Osbourne. The second half was dominated by Newbridge in terms of territory and possession and Newbridge eventually got the tries they sought through recently converted back and captain William O Brien and another by the excellent Peter Osbourne. It was a win Newbridge needed but they know that sterner tests lie ahead and performance must be improved greatly. Best for Newbridge on the day were Bryan O Donnell, David Rigney and James Connolly in the pack and Peter Osbourne, William O’Brien and John Jennings in the backs.
The Senior 1st Hockey Team played their final league match of their group and needed a win to feature. The opposition was a strong and well organised Sutton Park. The game began with most of the possession with Newbridge and most of the action in the Sutton end. Newbridge had a few shots on goal and some great breakaway moves to score but they came to nought. Sutton Park soon came into their stride and started to attack slipping in behind the Newbridge defense. However the goal finally came from a well planned moved that involved Aoife Bergin and the scorer Muireann Kavanagh who let fly from the top of the Semi Circle and hit the back board. The score at half time was 1-0. The second half begun with a strong attack from Sutton and Newbridge found themselves under great pressure. Strong play from Ashley O’Sullivan, Melissa Lyons, Roisin Flynn, Aileen Kyne and Emily Hiiggins in the mids was instrumental to the manufacturing of the next goal which was shot across the goal from Melissa Lyons where the on coming Una Delahunt smashed it home. Sutton clawed back a late consolation goal with minutes to go through a short corner, however it was to be Newbridge College’s day. We await other results to see whether we have qualified to the knock out stages.
