We start this week by commiserating with our Senior Hockey Squad who were beaten by a fantastic Mount Sackville team in the Leinster Senior Schools Hockey Cup.
The girls played their hearts out throughout and gave their best, congrats to all players. Special recognition to Captain Ciara Reynolds, Roisin Flynn, Aileen Kyne, Melissa Lyons and player of the match Louise Murphy.
Our Senior team travelled to Dublin to take on a strong St Mary’s side as their Cup date with St Michaels approaches. We started the game very well and for 20 minutes enjoyed a lion’s share of the possession. However, Mary’s defended their line well and we only managed 3 points in this period, Peter Osbourne converting one of two opportunities. Mary’s then made us pay for this when they crossed for a try 5 minutes before the break. A defensive slip saw them score again on the stroke of half time to lead 12 3. We got going again at the start of the second half with another Osbourne penalty and this really got the team settled. Our front row of James Tracy, Conor Thopmpson and David Rigney were beginning to win the battled up front while our lineout both offensive and defensive was also making it hard for Mary’s. Then from a loose pass, James Tracy intercepted at half way and managed to race clear and score under the posts. Osbourne converted, 13 12 lead, game on. We were well on top at this stage with Darragh Hennebry and Gary Burns finding holes in the Mary’s defense. And it was Gary Burns who was next to score when he chipped over the backline, chased and gathered for a great individual score. Mary’s got a quick penalty back to get them within two points with time running out. With a minute left on the clock they were then awarded what looked a very soft penalty which they also converted to take the slenderest of leads. At was all or nothing now and from the restart Flyin Jack Cantillon rose above the Mary’s jumper which was a sight to behold. From the last play of the game, Conor Browne saw a drop goal attempt sail to the left and wide and we had to settle for a one point loss on this occasion. Overall, this was an excellent performance which righted a few wrongs from the teams meeting earlier in the season and was exactly what we needed so close to our first Cup match.
