Newbridge College 1st year boys put up a sterling performance against Portlaoise CBS on Weds morning last.
While the Laois side were ahead for most of the game their lead was mainly attributed to free throw scores as a result of fouls committed by the Newbridge side under the basket. Newbridge chalked up team fouls in the first and second qtr giving Portlaoise the opportunity to convert scores on the free throw line. Newbridge forced a time out however when they took Portlaoise by surprise in the second half with a full court press that resulted in several turnovers for the College. Scored for Newbridge: Tom Connolly 10, Cian Springate 8, Daragh Ryan 6, Luke Heffernan 6, Hugh Leavy 5, Didier Cordonnier 2.
A excellent game on Tuesday unfortunately saw the Newbridge Junior C team lose its quarter final to strong team from Gerards, it was a game of 2 halves with Newbridge conceding 2 tries going into the break. A good half time rev up by the coaches saw a totally different Newbridge team come out on the field in the second half. Gerards scored off the kick off but after that it was all Newbridge, once the team started working together they managed to string some excellent phase play together, a strong game by scrum half Sean Cox and forwards Austin O'Mahony, Mikey Quinn and captain Brian Kelly brought Newbridge back into the game with a few minutes left scoring 2 quick tries both through Charlie Byrne, but the 100 strong crowd couldn't cheer the boys on so the final score stayed at 21-10.
