Sports Roundup September 20

RUGBY
The Seniors played their first match of the season against Ard Scoil Ris, in Limerick, on Wedneday last.

They lost 14-9 in a competitive and useful first run out. They were unlucky to lose despite a much improved second half performance, where Newbridge were camped in the opposition 22 for most of the half. However handling errors and discipline at the breakdown cost them. There were strong performances from Colin Grant, Billy Scully and William O Brien in the pack and Ben O Connor and Cathal Murtagh in the backline.

On Thursday afternoon the Juniors played their first game of the season against Glenstal.  The match started very evenly with both teams making few mistakes and kicking well for territory when needed.  This early equilibrium between with the boys from Limerick was however broken when Joe D’Arcy managed to break well off a broken down Glenstal attack to score under the posts.  Glenstal were further punished when a Newbridge back line move was well finished by Paddy Kyne.  Just before the half’s end the Newbridge forwards used their now dominance around the break down to score well in the corner through Matthew Stapleton.  The second half started just as the first, with a hard battle in the middle of the pitch for authority.  Again this was broken when Newbridge back Jack O’Neill broke well to add a try to an all round fine performance.  Newbridge finished the stronger side and ran out comfortable 50-0 winners.  In a great team performance, best on the day for Newbridge were Jack O’Neill and Mark Sutton. Whilst the forwards were ably led by Cormac Nugent and captain for the day Tom Brady.

Well done to the Ellers on winning the mini Blitz v Roscrea. The Ellers won the 4 games played.

Other result: Junior B v Castleknock 7-39
