Sports Roundup September 30

Inter A 17- St Mary’s 18.  Newbridge were unlucky to lose to a late St Mary’s drop-goal at Kenilsworth Square.

Gavin Burke scored first for Newbridge in the corner. Later in the half a lovely chip over the St Mary’s backline was converted by Niall Wyer in the corner. St Mary’s scored just before half time to leave the scores 10-5 in favour of Newbridge at the break. Captain for the day Colm Stapleton did remarkably well early in the second half to run the length of the pitch to score, what was Newbridge’s final points. His try, converted by Colm Doyle, left the score 17-8 in favour of Newbridge with fifteen minutes to go. Best on the day for Newbridge were Colm Stapleton, Tim Murphy, David Breen and Man of the Match Coilin Phelan.

On Wednesday last Newbridge College Inter C’s Travelled to play St. Mary’s in Dublin. It was a great afternoon for rugby. The game began with St. Mary’s kicking off with the aid of a reasonable breeze. They put pressure on us from the start and after soaking up pressure for 15 min the eventually got in for a converted try in the corner. After being on the back up to now Newbridge came out fighting and responded with two great converted tries of their own (Michael Maher & Billy Horrigan, both converted by James Lawlor) this left the score at 14-7 at the interval. In the second half the roles were reversed. Newbridge applied pressure early on and Michael Maher went over for his second try of the game and was converted by james Lawlor once again. Then Mary’s started a comeback with two tries of their own however the first of these was not converted. This kick was to prove the difference on the day with the final score 21-19 to Newbridge. This was a tight, tough game all the way through and only for some great defending and tackling by Newbridge the result could well be different. Best on the day were, Matt Barrett, Fionn Nolan, John Power, Ross Borton, James Lawlor, Tom Finn, David Donovan (Capt), Michael Dillon, Michael Maher and Darragh Smith.
