Sports Update 13 October

Our Senior squad travelled to Dublin to take on Gonzaga last Wednesday  in two difficult fixtures.

The 1st’s battled hard throughout to a tough game which ended up in stalemate with both teams scoring 22 points.  In the 2nd’s game, our young side found the going tough against a really good side full of 6th year boys with the Dublin school winning well

Our Junior’s travelled to Bray to take on Presentation in their 2nd league outing.  We started this game poorly and it was disappointing that our defence didn’t hold out long even though it had been the main focus of training for the past week.  It looked at though we could be on course for a pasting at half time with the Bray school leading by 19 points to nil.  However some stern words at the break resulted in a much better show in the 2nd half with Billy Dardis, Billy Scully and Colin Grant all crossing for tries that saw us win the half but lose 33:15 in the end.  We must learn our lessons quickly about starting well in games, especially away from home seeing as our next two league fixtures are exactly that, away from home, starting with a trip to C.U.S. next Wednesday.
Other Results: Inter A 12 Clongowes 17; Inter B 0 Clongowes 40; Inter C 0 Clongowes 30; Ellers / Gonzaga Blitz – 36 games: Newbridge won 19, Gonzaga won 12 and there were 5 draws.

The Newbridge Junior B’s got their season up and running in fine form last Wednesday against High School.  Newbridge played with fantastic urgency and skill in the first half and deservedly were 1-0 up at the break.  Fiona Conroy got on the end of a fine passing move to slot the ball into the goal.  Aoife Keane and Reba Murphy marshaled the defence with great authority and helped make Shannon O’Gorman’s debut on goal an uneventful one!  The second half began like the first with Newbridge in charge.  Two more well taken goals from Ashley O’Sullivan and Maeve O’Brien put the result beyond doubt.  A great start to the season and lets hope they can build on this in the next game.

The Junior A’s had a friendly against their local rivals and neighbours St. Mary’s College.  It was an evenly matched and entertaining game, but lacked a little bit of sharpness and cutting edge from both teams.  Newbridge were unlucky to be defeated 2-1, Aoife Bergin getting a well deserved goal.  Best for Newbridge on the day were Rachel Phelan and Alyssa O’Neill. Looking forward to a rematch in a month’s time!
The Junior C’s drew 0-0 with the Cross and Passion. Best for Newbridge were Jennifer Marsh and Grainne Maher.
Congratulations to the Minor A team who drew 1-1 against a very strong Mount Sackville Team.  All players gave a great performance.  Goal scored by Roisin Flynn.
Congratulations to the Minor C team who beat Kings Hospital 3-0.  Superb performance by all. Goals – Jessica Murphy and Orla Curtis.
Congratulations to the Senior 1st team on a gallant performance against a very strong St. Dominics team, despite losing 1-0 the girls showed great heart and determination throughout.  Notable performances from Kathie O Sullivan, Una Delahunt, Eimear Aherne just to mention a few and to the person of the match Siobhain Deasy.

Congratulations to the u/16 Cadet Basketball players who had a hard fought victory 17-16 against St Josephs, Rocherfordsbrige last Friday.  Special praise must be given to Aoife Bergin, Heather Meagher, Emma-Jane Vaughn, Aoife Keane, Amy Walsh and Clara Berney.  Their next game is Thurs 16th against Granard.  The bus will leave at 9am and should return at 3pm.

Well done to our U19 Boys team who came from 2 goals down to draw with Naas CBS in the first match of their midlands league last week.

Hard luck to our U18 Girls soccer team who lost 4:2 to Cross & Passion last Thursday.  Best for Newbridge were Sarah O’Connell and goalkeeper Halley Cross .
