RUGBY
Our Senior Cup Team travelled to Dublin to take on Wesley College in the League last Wednesday.  Having won their opening 4 games to date, the team are high in confidence and this told on the day as they won comfortably by 22 points to 3.  This means that we have now qualified for the semi final stages with one league match to spare so very well done to all the lads for the great start to the season.

Our Junior Cup Team hosted Roscrea in a crunch tie in the League.  Having lost twice so far our U15’s knew that it was do or die in this game and that’s exactly how they treated it.  We started really well and scored a fine try when Billy Dardis finished a fine period of play.  Eoin Murphy looked to have stretched the lead minutes later but was adjudged to have been held up over the line.  However the same player scored made no mistake just before half time when he chipped and chased a kick and dove over for another fine try.  Matthew Madigan converted to give us a 12:0 halftime lead.  In the second half Roscrea rose their efforts and were back in the game when a defensive lapse let them in for a 7 pointer.  And so it was game on for the last 10 minutes.  Roscrea had a few half chances but then Newbridge were awarded a penalty in kicking distance and Madigan made no mistake.  This gave us an 8 point lead with time running out and virtually ended the game as a contest.  Best on the day were Richard Snell, Richard Dalton.  Final score, Newbridge 15 Roscrea 7.

Inter A’s  travelled to Blackrock College for an away fixture this week.  The final score saw  Newbridge losing out 33 – 8 however this in no way reflects the battle that took place.  Blackrock capitalised with two very quick tries in the first 5 min after which Newbridge settled a began to dominate proceedings. With a Billy Delaney try and a Charlie Ryan drop goal the score remained 19 – 8 right up the last 5 minutes before a lack of concentration on Newbridge’s side allowed Blackrock two converted tries in under the posts.

In the last few weeks Newbridge College Inter B team have faced Terenure, C.B.C Monkstown and Blackrock.  Throughout these 3 games we had mixed fortunes. A try for Terenure in the dying minutes of the game snatched a win from our grasp. Having played Terenure away we then welcomed C.B.C to the College.  Having not lost a home game this year our home form once again stood firm. This was a hard fought game and was in the balance until a break from Ciaran Harris who popped the ball off to David wall swung the game in our favour.  Then Last Wednesday we travelled away to Blackrock and came up against a very strong Blackrock B team. We fought hard but found it difficult to break them down.  Very solid team performances in all three games however Eugene Price, Ronan McDonald, Paudie Wall, David Wall, Brian Mooney, Ciaran Harris, Sean Healy and Luke Tai deserve special mention.

Of the three Inter teams playing in Blackrock on Wednesday, the Inter C's came the closest to winning their game and in fact should have won. The match was quite an even competition on a nice crisp day in Dublin and if Newbridge had scored every time they crossed the line, the game would have been at least a draw. They were held up on a number of occassions but seeing as they hadn't played a game in two weeks they can be very happy with their performance. The tackling was an area that definately improved since the Terenure match. The two scorers on the day were winger Mark Shanahan and number 8, Ben Phelan. Jack Hickey converted one of the scores to leave Newbridge’s tally at 12 points. Unfortunately, Blackrock scored 22 points.
