The Junior A’s travelled to Dublin to take on Wesley College in a must win match in the Leinster League.
And it was to be a great day for us as we ran out winners by 46 points to 5. Our try scorers were Richard Dalton (2), Billy Dardis (2), Robbie Mullen, Colin Grant and Eanna Osbourne with Matthew Madigan adding 3 conversions. Others to impress on the day were Richard Snell, Brian O’Donnell and Craig Grant. The main focus for the day was to focus on going through phases and playing as a team throughout which we certainly succeeded in doing. After that it was all about working hard and supporting your teammates and we did this in abundance right from the first whistle. We can be very proud of this result and now look forward to the next league match which is a crunch tie against Roscrea in Newbridge on Wednesday November 12th.
The Inter A’s played a skilled Terenure side on Wednesday but felt that they should have come away with a win. The final score of 15-5 doesn’t reflect the good team performance by Newbridge and the work rate by all players. In the first half, Terenure put points on the board first after some good ball retention in the 22. Newbridge defended well but after a number of phases and penalties the try was scored. Newbridge responded not long after with a try in the corner by Jack Coghlan Murray. With the scores level it was anybody’s game. Newbridge perhaps should have had another try or two before the break but for a missed passes. It was the home side that scored next with a penalty and again with a converted try. It was hard to pick out players that stood out on a day when everybody played well. They were disappointed that the performance didn’t convert to a win but they will get a chance to play Terenure again!
The Inter C’s played a strong Terenure side and while the scoreline doesn’t look pretty, they can be happy with their performance. Captain Luke Tai led by example with a fantastic work rate, putting in a lot of good tackles. Luke Gillespie, Ciaran Mc Shane and Conor Leavy were other players who made good contributions on the day. Conor Mc Carthy nearly got a try early on in the match but for a confusing dead ball area. Newbridge did get a try, Ciaran Mc Shane the scorer which was converted by Conor Leavy.
A great match was played between the neighbouring schools, Newbridge College and Clongowes. The first half consisted of numerous tackles which took their toll on all players. Clongowes broke through the strong Newbridge defence after 20 minutes and were leading by 5 – 0 at the interval. Newbridge had a strong second half with Jack Lalor scoring a forward worked try. Clongowes responded but the next 10 minutes saw a continuous Newbridge attack which was bravely defended by Clongowes. Best for Newbridge were Charlie Conlan, Benjamin McCurtain, Thomas Treacy, Tom Dunne, Richard Dromgoole-Maguire.
Other Results: Senior 1st 18 Pres.Bray 11; U16A 24 Pres.Bray 8; Inter B 32 Terenure 39;
Eller A 20 Clongowes 7; Eller C 19 Clongowes 37; Eller D 26 Clongowes 39.
Hard luck to our Minor A team who lost 0-3 to Loreto Beaufort. They put enormous pressure on the Beaufort defence and had a number of very close shots in the second half but unfortunately didn’t score. Great performances from all the team but in particular Phoebe Jennings, Clara Berney and Hannah Neary.
Good result for our Minor C team who held Loreto Dalkey to a 0-0 draw yesterday. The Dalkey defence was hard at work for most of the match but the Newbridge girls were unlucky with their shots on goal. The future looks promising for our Minor C team. Well done to Captain Ciara Horrigan and the rest of the squad on a great game.
Congratulations to all the athletes on their fantastic performances at the Cross Country League on Tuesday. Amy Downes and Niall Delahunt both won their races very convincingly. Liz McLoughlin was placed 3rd in her race. The team results will be e-mailed to us over the next few days. The U.14 boys team appear to have won this stage in the league. The team: Niall Delahunt, Justin Deane (5th), Conn Whelan (10th), Mike Healion (13th), Charlie Dardis (20th). The U. 15 girls appear to have won also: Amy Downes (1st), Liz McLoughlin (3rd), Sorcha Whelan (7th), Ashling Wyer (8th). We are not sure of the U.15 boys results but will confirm it later this week.
