Our Junior Cup Team took on Kilkenny in a winner takes all play-off match last Wednesday in County Carlow RFC’s Dr Cullen Park in Carlow town.
We had the better of the exchanges in the first half but only had a Matthew Madigan penalty to show for all our work at the break. In the second half, Kilkenny really got into their stride but our defense held strong even on our own try line. We restricted Kilkenny to a solitary shot at goal, which came back off the upright and kept our lead in tact. Then our opponents had a try disallowed when the referee correctly deemed there to be crossing infringement. And so we held on and won by 3 points to nil which means we go into the hat for Monday’s draw for the last 16 of this year’s Leinster Schools Junior Cup. Best on the day were Kevin Callan, Ashley Duane, Colin Grant and Craig Grant.
The Inter A’s had a convincing win in their match this week against Kings Hospital. After a shaky start where they conceded a penalty and three points to KH, Newbridge settled into the game and continued to dominate much of the rest of the game. The team support play and decision making was very good and this was highlighted by some fantastic lines of run by Mark Kavanagh and Oisin Mc Knight. For the first time this season, Newbridge put their opponents under pressure defensively and two of the top tacklers on the day were Charlie Ryan and Bryan Hayden. Newbridge were rewarded for their control of the possession with some good tries and finished the game with a total of six tries. Two for Edward Wynne, two from Billy Delaney and a try each from Jack Coghlan Murray and Oisin Mc Knight. Charlie Ryan converted two of the tries. In one lapse of concentration the Kings Hospital managed to get a converted try which left the final score at 34-10.
Last Wednesday Newbridge College Inter B’s travelled to Kings Hospital. Having not won away from home in a couple of weeks it was time to get back to winning ways and the team didn’t disappoint. We scored three tries within the 1st 10 mins and that gave us the platform we needed to win this game. The team was playing well and before half time we had another two tries. However after KH got over the initial shock they began improve. They tested our defense both sides of the half time whistle however we stood firm and with another try in the second half we secured a 38-0 win. This was a good overall team performance with, Lee Travers, Luke Gillespie, Jordan Kennna (Capt), Brian Mooney, Paudie Wall, Paddy Cross, Mark Winters and Luke Tai putting in some fine performances. Scorers on the day: Paddy Cross (Tries x2,Cons x4) Paul Buckley, Luke Tai, John Ennis and Conor Leavy (Tries x1)
