Sprots Roundup February 3

Commiserations to the Senior Cup Team on their defeat at the hands of Pres Bray in the Leinster Senior Cup last week.

It could not have been closer in the end and sometimes that is very hard to take.  We thought that we had done enough to win it with a spectacular try close to the end but Pres managed to nick it right on full time.  We still have the final of the Vinny Murray Cup to look forward to and it would be a great achievement to win this trophy which has eluded us since the new format started a few years back.

Hard luck to the minor hockey girls who missed out on a place in the quarter finals of the Leinster Minor cup losing 2-0 to St Gerard’s Bray (a division above). The match was end to end for the 1st half with plenty of free flowing hockey on display from teams. Louise Scully playing left wing was a constant menace and very creative in attack. Nessa Briody playing in centre midfield distributed the ball with great authority to her team mates and set up numerous attacks down the right, linking up well with Lucy Stapleton(player of the match) and Lucy Field. St. Gerard’s however midway through the half took the lead through a lapse in concentration from our defence. Newbridge were then unlucky no to equalise immediately from a brilliantly taken shot from a  short corner from Laura Hannon. Their goalie in fairness pulled off an excellently save. Both goalie’s were in fine form to keep the score 1-0 at half time. With Hannah Begley a commanding presence behind the Newbridge defence.
The 2nd half was a similarly hard fought contest. Hannah Begley immediately called into action to brilliantly save a drag flicked short corner. With Newbridge pressing higher up the pitch as the half wore on, they unfortunately got caught napping at the back and let in another soft goal. A break through goal never came for the girls and 2-0 was the final score. A valuable match in terms of experience for the Newbridge girls.  The quarter final of the league is up next, so hopefully this level of hockey will stand them in good stead.  Keep it Hooked!!!
