We start this week by congratulating the Junior Cup Squad who have qualified for the last 16 of this seasonís Leinster Schools Junior Cup. They did so by way of victory over St Gerardís of Bray in the league playoff on Saturday in Templeogue College Dublin.
Played in horrendous conditions both teams showed great skill to put together any kind of performance at all. The Bray side played with the wind in the first half and were quickly ahead with a 7 pointer after only 5 minutes play. We fought back well and scored a try of our own but still trailed 7 Ė 5 at the break. We turned around and used the conditions to play the majority of the half down in the Gerardís 22. We were finding it difficult to keep the ball with a combination of handling errors and players getting isolated leading to too many turn overs. Finally with about 7 minutes left in the game with got a penalty opportunity and Peter Osbourne calmly slotted home a difficult kick to put us a point up. Gerardís came roaring back at us and might have stolen it at the death but for a knock-on at a crucial time. And so we won 8 Ė 7 and now look forward to the draw which takes place on Monday week in Dublin. Well done to all the players and coaches on a good season to date.
Our U16ís hosted Pres Bray A in the College last Wednesday fielding a team mainly made up of regular B team players. The Pres side had a few very strong players, especially at out half and first centre and they tried to run the game. But we had the pack to cause the Bray side concern and also give our own backs a chance to shine. The game turned out to be very entertaining and Newbridge ran out winners 20 Ė 12. Those to impress on the day were Ronan OíNeachtain, Jonathan Snell and Cathal Maguire.
