The girls u/16 Cadet Basketball started their ‘08/09 season in a manner similar to their brilliant season last year when they finished runners-up in the All Ireland C Division. Upon being promoted to B Division they went on to defeat Wilson’s Hospital Mullingar, St Josephs Rochfortbridge and Cnoc Mhuire Granard in Oct. On Nov 25th they played St Marys Naas in a exciting Semi Final at home. The game was very close and went to extra time. The girls played fantastic basketball and won by 3 points in the end. They then went on to play St Leos Carlow in the Regional Final on December 11th in Thurles which they won by 42- 36. The girls got off to a great start and after a few minutes were in the lead and never lost it. They played extremely well with Heather Meagher scoring 10 baskets, Rebecca O’Sullivan scored three 3 pointers and Aoife Bergin, Emma-Jane Vaughn, Aoife Keane and Clara Berney all added to the scoresheet.
Having won the Regionals the Cadets then progressed to the All-Ireland Quarter-Final Playoffs in Athlone on Jan 14th 2009. The girls had three games. They met Eureka, Kells first and suffered their first defeat of the season losing 22-30. They then played St Nathys and won 69-27 recording their highest ever score. Next they played OLSPK from Belfast and again won 40-19. Unfortunately Eureka won their three games so they progressed to the Semi-Finals.
It was a wonderful season for the team reaching the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals especially considering they are now playing in Division B. Their futures look very bright.

In April Newbridge College took a team to the annual Dominican Colleges Tournament. It was held in Muckross. The girls won their first game against Muckross. They then had a huge game against Cabra who they defeated in great style. Cabra was last years runners-up so the Newbridge Girls knew this was a great win. They then went on to win the Semi-Final. Following this they played last year’s winners Taylor’s Hill in Galway. This was a very strong physical team and although Newbridge played very well they lost by a small margin. Most of the Newbridge team can play in this Tournament for 2-4 more years!!
The team consisted of Heather Meagher, Amy Walsh, Aoife Keane, Melissa Lyons, Rebecca & Katie O’Sullivan, Emma-Jane Vaughn, Clara Berney, Aoife Bergin and Laura Murphy.
Coach Carol Osborne is already looking forward to the 2009/2010 season where she will have Senior, Cadet, First and Second year teams and a team for the Dominican Tournament.
