Sports Roundup 30th November

“JCT reach Leinster League semi-final”

RUGBY
Our Seniors travelled to Balbriggan RFC to take on Skerries Community College last Saturday morning.  We always knew this was going to be a stiff test and that’s exactly what it turned out to be.  We traded early penalties in an even opening twenty minutes with both teams working hard to grab control of the game.  With the score at 9:6 to Skerries, they took a commanding lead when they crossed for a try in the corner.  This gave them a half time lead of 8 points.  We regrouped at the break and came out looking like a different team in the second half.  Cormac Meylor almost scored a great breakaway try but was tackled off the ball inches from the line.  Amazingly the ref only awarded Newbridge a penalty where a yellow card and possibly even a penalty try could have been given.  From the penalty however, we camped on the Skerries line and then Peter Osbourne dummied and dived over to score.  The same player added the conversion to leave us a single point behind. Game on. We worked our way back into the Skerries 22 and Adrian Dunne then looked to have won it with a great try in the corner only for the Skerries touchjudge to call him back for a foot in touch.  We weren’t to be denied though and when Gary Burns picked a great line and eventually linked with Jack Cantillon, The later crashed over under the posts. Osbourne converted to bring his personal tally to 15 points.  We hung on in a nail biting last five minutes and got the win that our second half performance richly deserved.

Our Juniors travelled to King Hospital in what was a top of the table clash.  Both teams were already sure of their place in the semi-final but we ensured top spot by winning by 17 points to 10.

Congratulations to Alyssa O'Neill who recorded her 5th win of the hoofprints interschools indiviodual showjumping league held in Kilkenny on Sunday the 22nd.  Our two teams also did well in the team competition. Both qualified for the final jump off round with our black team (Alyssa, Leanne O'Sullivan, Carolyn Harty and Ashley O'Sullivan) finishing in 4th place and our white team (Aisling Doyle, Patrick Harty, Brid Conlan and Holly Hannigan) finishing in 7th place out of 48 teams.

SOCCER
Hard luck to our U16 Boys Soccer team who lost by three goals to 2 against Clane C.S. on Friday.  We can still qualify for the league semi-finals with a win in our final game so all is not lost yet!
